Powerful configurable switch/router for a very low cost, with a loud fanI’ve had this switch for a while now and wanted to share my experience.I bought this unit for some technical demonstrations that needed a couple of less common network features, including a small number of SFP ports and finely configurable DHCP services and NAT etc. What I found is first off, the fan is astonishingly loud, not something you want to sit next to for long and even draws comment from people just walking by. If placed away from my demo, or in a cabinet/enclosure it’s not so bad, but it is the first thing to notice about the device. After that, the GUI is very powerful and extremely configurable. Network features that are usually only available on high-end enterprise routers or switches are available on this tiny unit. However, this capability comes with the tradeoff that it is quite complex and intricate, and specific settings can be somewhat hard to locate until you become familiar with the Cloud Router OS. To offset this, there is a Quick-set menu that helps significantly. Power users will be very pleased with all of the possibilities, but basic users may be daunted even by the quick-set options. The touch-screen is a huge asset, and even a small screen like this one is enough to provide great detail about the device, and even set interface addresses. This feature alone is tremendously useful.Overall I’m very pleased with the device and I am very interested in where Mikrotik takes their firmware and interface from here.

Fan is noisyRouter works as it should, slightly more difficult to set up than others. But the fan is noisy. That is my only complaint. Had I known that I would have spent a little more to get the fanless model.
