Surprising Difference with HT Streaming SetupI have a pretty high-end audio system. And taking a page out of my digital streamer’s book which uses a higher quality of these units to convert copper to light, I felt compelled to see what these fairly inexpensive devices were capable of. So I installed one right after my (inexpensive) ethernet switch and another right near my Nvidia ShieldTV Pro (about 6-7′ away). Bought a 3m run of optical patch cable and hooked everything up. To my surprise, the video was SHARP. Even a crappy feed from PlutoTV looked near 4k quality. But the biggest difference was in audio. Yes, it’s lossy and even 2 channel PCM often but let me tell you, it is 100% improved. The ‘chestiness’ resonance/distortion when you turn up lossy DD+ on many programs is all but gone. It’s clean and just goes louder and louder. Imaging/phasing is what is even more dramatic. In the morning, I like to get up early and have a cup of coffee. I watch PlutoTV and as anyone who frequents that app, they know how often you see the same commercials over and over and over again. The difference for me in the morning is, I only fire up my multi-channel amp which powers my center, surrounds and atmos speakers. My mains amp remains off since it sucks a lot of juice (Ayre Acoustics). I am normally browsing my phone or tablet for news, events or whatever is going on but today I actually was jarred by a simple commercial. The sound is usually crammed almost entirely into the center speaker and some dribble in the L/R surrounds. The on camera scene was in fact front and center. But his wife says something from the other room which normally just flows out from the center channel. Today, her voice was far, far behind me. Not a peep of her voice was in my center speaker and it really caught me off guard since I’ve heard this commercial soo many times before. She was not only JUST in the surrounds but also out of phase to make her sound like she was back behind me some 15′. It was erie to say the least! Last night with all speakers on, I watched some Dolby Atmos material and it was just as fabulous. My Atmos speakers were really loving the workout from streaming. Placement within the room was approaching that of my Oppo UDP-205 player with Atmos or a DTS:X movie playing. My NAS is almost complete and I’ll be ripping my 500-600 blurays/4k movies to it. I can only imagine how lossless audio will benefit! Now for theories about why this made things better, I really don’t have one. I am no scientist but when I bought the audio streamer and it took out all the hiss and distortion (usually in the form of loudness, bloat and harshness) from my copper ethernet in my home network, I knew I had to at least try fiber optic on my video streamer. My questions are, how does the fiber clean up a dirty (noisy) signal? It doesn’t filter anything out that I’m aware of. Or maybe because fiber works at such a high frequency, could it shunt the RF or EMI out somehow with the conversion process? But then again, that’s filtering. So I don’t know… I have much to learn about but I know what I see and hear. And I had many, many hours on my equipment prior to adding in fiber optic ethernet. The difference is simply unmistakable. And there is nothing on this concept (using it in HT applications) on the internet that I could find. I say give it a try. If you don’t see or hear a difference, simply return the items and move on.

This product works as advertised.I extended the internet by 200 meters. I attached it to a Netgear extender. The speed is like being in the room with the router.

Easy to install and completeEasy peazy. Connected my terminated fiber optic the convertor then to a splitter for 4-5 connections more. I was quoted $5,300 to install everything without burying the cable. I did the whole job for $500.

Easy way to extend high speed LAN in the home. Better than WIFI.Needed to extend the fiber Ethernet connection from the router where in comes in from the service provider. WIFI 100 feet away in the home speed was much slower, like 75% slower.. With this pair of media converters and a single LC-LC fiber cable – 30 meters long does the job. Working bi-directional of a single fiber I get the same data rate as seen at the router, about 950 MBPS up and download with no data speed loss. Awesome technology. The transceivers transmit and receive on different wavelengths so it’s full duplex.

No issues, does what it shouldHave a few sets of these running and they are doing varying distances. Farthest I have is a 11km link running perfectly well. Does feel a bit cheap but that’s to be expected for the price

Great Deal! Just know, and have your supplies. These are fantastic! You MUST have a basic understanding of SFP, DAC, LC-LC, SC-SC, ethernet… THIS REQUIRES: SINGLE LC-LC, can be hard to find but they are on prime too if you look.

RFI out the gazooI planned to use fiber to allow me to operate my ham radios remotely. The wall warts supplied generate 10 over 9 RFI so operation is impossible. I have ordered more wall warts but in the mean time I have tried ferite beads, etc to no avail. I gave up and ran cat6. Works like a charm.

Ultra Chinesiumworks well enough for what I need it for but there are misspellings all over the device and also it says “for your pleasure” on the back of the box. Super secret Chinese tap to intercept all of your data in flight at a really affordable price. I would recommend using this piece of trash for home networks and NOT for production security sensitive networks.

Easy Peasy Plug and PlayThis works with multiple brand of SFP unlike the cisco switch that uses it’s proprietary SFP.I was able to connect this directly to the Cisco switch and it detects it right away. I tried multiple SFP in this to connect to the cisco SFP and it works. You don’t have to pair it. Thanks!

Unit loses connectionI am not sure what is happening with these converters. I am using them as lightning protection. I have an underground cable that travels from one building to the other. Instead of plugging directly into the switch, I plug the outside connection into one of the converters. Then, I use Fiber to travel to the next converter. Finally, I plug ethernet from the converter to the switch. For some reason, one of the converters stops working. I can unplug power to the converter that goes to the switch and communications is restored. Has anyone else had this happen.

93Mbps Transfer Speed Expected Closer to 1000MbpsI bought these as a pair of 1.25G/s Bidi Gigabit Single-Mode Fiber Ethernet Media Converters with a pair of Bidi SFPs. So far, I can only get at best 93 Mbps transfer speeds. Maybe I have the wrong fiber cable? (Jeirdus 2Meters 6ft LC to LC Fiber Optic Cable Jumper Optical Patch Cord Simplex Single-Mode 9/125 LC-LC) . I also noticed that one SFP LC Transceiver Module is module number SFP-GE-LX-SM1310 and the other module is model number is SFP-GE-LX-SM1550. One module is Tx13/Rx15 and the other module is Tx15/Rx13, so they seem compatible.Update: Tried multimode cable (Multimode Simplex Fiber Optic Cable (50/125) – LC to LC) with essentially the same results, 95 Mbps. Still no where near 1000 Mbps.Last Update: I connected one converter to my main router using the RG45 Ethernet ports. The router’s status LED for this connection indicated only a 100 BASE-T Ethernet connection.

Hooked up correctly, didn’t work out of the box.Ran a LC to LC fiber patch cable between, preterminated with RX/TX crossing over from point A to point B, all correctly specified. 850nm/550m transceivers at each end as part of this kit. Fiber link light was on and flashing activity. Everything seemed fine up until that point. On the copper/RJ45 side, it showed a link but the device(s) would not actually pass any packets to the other end. For the sake of testing, I tried it with a (brand new) short fiber patch cable, various ethernet cables ranging from short, long, straight through, crossover. Multiple computers/network cards and routers for interfaces, tried forcing the speed and duplex to all combinations… I mean EVERYTHING I could think of assuming I had made an error… Nothing would work, always the same problem. Wasted literal days troubleshooting this. Finally I bought 2 of the Startech units specified exactly the same as these, swapped them onto same cables, and everything worked first try.I think I was probably just unlucky and got a bum one, but… I don’t know what to say. it was an unfortunate experience.

Works beautifully at full loadI used to have a really long CAT5e cable for my internet (my ISP’s RJ45 plug is in the worst location possible, so it has to travel quite a ways to my router). Sometimes I had link breaks due to, well, the cable being too long.Bought a set of two of these (without modules), added two used SFP modules I got cheap and ran speed tests, confirming they can easily run full gigabit.Don’t get warm at all, so they practically don’t use any power, which is a plus.Only thing I would like to see would be maybe fault passthru, but not a show stopper for my use case.

ImpressedThese work, and work easily. I had some random SFPs leftover from a project, plugged them in and connected my 300ft fiber run. I had immediate connection with throughput. Make sure you clean your fiber connections, I suspect many people don’t do this, then are disappointed with the connection speed. But yes, these worked with my random SFPs.
